cops throwing stone seen caught on camera

A day after violence erupted in the Mitmita area over the issue of dumping garbage, CCTV footage has emerged showing police personnel pelting stones at houses.
A CCTV camera installed at a house in the area where violence erupted on Wednesday clearly shows a woman constable picking up stones and throwing them at houses. She is joined in the stone-pelting by female and male colleagues. Minutes later, one of the policemen spots the camera, following which it is damaged.Local residents claimed some CCTV cameras in the area have caught police personnel damaging parked vehicles and demanded that they be booked for rioting and damaging property.

When contacted, none of the senior police officers, including deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (zone-I) Vinayak Dhakne and DCP (headquarters) Deepali Dhate, agreed to come on record about the incident. Repeated attempts to get the police commissioner’s quote proved futile. Sources in the police department said that after being pulled up, DCP (zone-II) Rahul Shrirame has been tasked with probing the incident but so far none of the cops caught on camera have been suspended or summoned to face an inquiry. Meanwhile, Ashok Mulay, a lawyer who resides in the Mitmita area, has filed a petition with the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay high court seeking action against the police and also compensation for the residents who were injured in the incident.
Around 35 police personnel, including Cantonment police inspector Mukund Deshmukh and woman inspector Rajshri Adhe, were injured when the residents of Mitmita turned violent while protesting against the dumping of garbage in their area. Several protesters were also injured when police used force to stop the violence. Police have booked more than 1,200 people on the charges of attempt to murder and rioting and rounded up 26 people. Those arrested have been remanded in police custody till March 12. Fearing arrest, the male residents of Mitmita area have fled their homes.

Adelegation of the Shiv Sena (SS) headed by MP Chandrakant Khaire and comprising MLA Sanjay Shirsat and others on Friday demanded registration of criminal offences against the policemen for indulging in rioting and damaging vehicles.
