The garbage collected near Gokul Sweets in N-4 Cidco was set on fire by unknown miscreants late on Monday night, leading to chaos and panic in the area. Several other locations in city saw similar fire incident due to garbage pile up.
At 11.45 pm, locals realised that the garbage piled at the corner of the street was burning. The alert citizens immediately called the Cidco fire brigade who reached the spot within 15 minutes and brought the situation under control.Owing to the agitation at Naregaon dumping points have been created across the city. The residents in the adjoining wards are throwing their waste at these points as door-to-door waste collection services by the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) have been stopped after the civic body could not find an alternative place to dispose waste.
Civic activist Rahul Ingle said it is the 18th day in a row when the waste from the site has not been cleared. “The open ground near the N-4 water tank has around a tonne of waste gathered. There is a high tension wire running over the spot and if the fire was not brought under in time, it could have resulted in a major accident,” he said.

Local sanitary inspector Sundar Dabhade said the residents in N-3, N-4 and Nyay Nagar are not allowing the AMC to dump the waste in pits in open spaces within their wards. Also, the collection vehicles and trucks have been filled to their capacity and are parked at Central Naka. “We can lift the garbage only when there is a breakthrough in the standoff. Until then, we are spraying anti-vector agent and putting odour control agent at the dumping points,” Dabhade said. Since the garbage crisis has begun, on February 16, similar dumping points have emerged at various places in the city. Cidco fire brigade confirmed that it has responded to six calls in this week to control fire at such points.
During solid waste management drive over the last two years, 740 dumping points out of the total 933 were removed.
