More than one lakh tickets were sold at Aurangabad railway station during Ijthema (Muslim Congregation) held from 24th to 26th February in the city, said an official release issued by the South Central Railway (SCR). The Nanded division, under which Aurangabad station is covered, generated an extra revenue of about Rs.70 Lakhs during Ijtema.
According to Rajesh Shinde, public relations officer of SCR, Nanded division, Aurangabad railway station witnessed three to four-fold increase in the sale of tickets on February 25 and 26. “Aurangabad railway station reports sale of an average 12,000 tickets per day, but Ijtema event caused huge surge in the sale of tickets. We have experienced heavy traffic from all corners of the Marathwada,” he was quoted as saying.
In order to handle the huge flow of rail traffic on the eve of Ijtema, the SCR undertook a concerted plan of action and directed the railway officials of Nanded division to take all measures for the smooth and convenient movement of the heavy outflow/inflow of passengers who congregated at Aurangabad for Ijtema.
A total of 36 Jansadharan special trains were run to handle the extra rush during the 3 day period. Additional coaches were also attached to several regular trains. Three DHMU special trains were also run in the midnight of February 26 to clear the traffic as thousands thronged the Aurangabad railway station for their return journey.
“For the convenience of Ijtema participants travelling by trains, we provided 11 additional ticket booking counters besides 10 counters at Aurangabad and one at Lasur station. We opened four enquiry counters also among other measures,” SCR Chief Public Relations Officer, M Uma Shankar Kumar, said by times of india.
