Unidentified miscreants desecrated the statue of Vinayak Savarkar at Samarth Nagar Cross Road on Saturday.
The incident embarrassed the city police force as it occurred near a makeshift police control room.
Soon after the incident came to light, the city police said they would be able to identify those behind the defilement on the basis of CCTV footages but much to their dismay the CCTV cameras near the statue were found to be non-functioning since Friday afternoon.
Moreover, a high definition CCTV camera installed at a nearby private property was also found to be switched off for the past 24 hours. Considering the gravity of the issue, personnel from Kranti Chowk Police led by inspector Shripad Paropkari checked CCTV cameras installed on the roads leading to the statue.
Based on the complaint lodged by Aurangabad Municipal Corporation’s deputy engineer (zone-II) Khan Abdul Farooq, the Kranti Chowk Police have registered a case under IPC section 295 (defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class).
The Union home ministry had recently issued an advisory to states to not only contain vandalism but also sternly deal with the culprits. It also sought to make the district magistrates and police unit commanders directly responsible for maintaining law and order in their respective jurisdiction.
